Using AI to Improve Efficiency in My Expert Witness Practice
When people hear that I am incorporating AI into my professional workflow, they often assume I am referring only to advanced imaging algorithms or cutting edge diagnostic tools. While I actively study those developments as part of my ongoing education in radiology, AI has also served me in a different, more practical way: it has helped me identify and implement existing technologies that improve efficiency in my expert witness practice.
One example is how I now use Google Calendar’s scheduling functionality to streamline consultations with attorneys. The scheduling tool itself is not artificial intelligence. It is a built in feature that has existed for some time. However, through deliberate exploration of AI driven productivity systems and workflow optimization, I was motivated to audit my own processes and identify avoidable friction points. Scheduling was one of them.
As a full time practicing overnight emergency radiologist, my availability is unorthodox. My clinical shifts occur at night. Daytime hours are often reserved for sleep and recovery. In addition, my expert witness work, personal commitments, and family responsibilities must be carefully balanced.
Rather than relying on back and forth emails to find a time to speak, I now use a calendar system that integrates directly with my schedule. It accounts for:
• Overnight clinical shifts
• Protected sleep hours
• Personal obligations
• Expert witness work
Attorneys can view real time availability and select a mutually convenient time without delay. The system automatically prevents conflicts and places the meeting directly on my calendar, with automatic emails sent to both parties at time of scheduling, and with reminder emails as a scheduled event approaches. The result is straightforward but meaningful: less administrative friction and faster alignment on a time to connect.
For attorneys managing active litigation, efficiency matters. Reducing scheduling delays allows us to move more quickly to the substantive issues in a case, and reduce billable hours for both parties. AI did not replace judgment in this process. Instead, it encouraged a more thoughtful evaluation of workflow and helped surface underused tools that were already available.
Sometimes progress is not about adopting entirely new technology. It is about using existing systems more intelligently.
